Florida gets more lightning than any other state, and Central Florida sits in the thick of it. From June through September we get thunderstorms most afternoons, and every one of them is putting voltage spikes onto the grid your house is connected to. If you have lived here through a summer, you already know what that sounds like.

A whole-home surge protector installs at your electrical panel and clamps down on voltage spikes before they travel out to your circuits. It is not a power strip. How the installation works

This is a straightforward job for a licensed electrician. The device mounts at or in your main panel and connects to the busbar through a dedicated breaker, with the shortest practical lead length, because long leads reduce how well the device performs. Power is off for a short window while we make the connections, and most installs are done in a couple of hours.

We size the device to your service and to how your panel is built, and we go over what we are putting in before we install it. The units we use have an indicator light on the front so you can tell at a glance that the protection is still live, because these devices do their job by absorbing energy, and after enough hits they need replacing. A protector with a dead indicator is just a gray box on your wall.

Do I still need power strips if I have a whole-home protector?

Yes, for your sensitive electronics. The panel device handles the large incoming spikes, and a good point-of-use protector at the outlet catches what gets past it. The two work together. Use the panel unit as your foundation and add local protection at the television, computer, and anything else you would hate to replace.

Will it protect my house from a direct lightning strike?

No, and anyone who says otherwise is not being straight with you. A direct strike to the structure carries far more energy than any surge device is built to handle. What a whole-home protector does is stop the far more common surges: nearby strikes, utility switching, and spikes generated inside your own house. That covers most of what actually damages equipment.

How long does a surge protector last?

These devices work by absorbing energy, so their life depends on how many surges they take. In Central Florida they work harder than they would most places. It might. Repeated control board failures are a classic symptom of surge damage accumulating over time, and the AC is often the first thing to show it because the compressor is both a victim and a source of internal surges. It is worth a conversation about what your system has been doing and how your panel is set up.
