The cords through the window plan
You know the drill. Power goes out, generator comes out of the garage, and then extension cords run through a cracked window to the refrigerator and a lamp. It works, sort of. What it does not do is run your air conditioning, your well pump, or anything hardwired, which after two days in a Florida August is most of what you actually care about.
A proper hookup connects the generator to your electrical system instead of to individual appliances. You plug in outside, and the circuits you chose ahead of time come back on. No cords through windows, no doors propped open, no arguing about which appliance gets the good outlet.
The safety issue you cannot ignore
There is one thing that makes generator work different from almost any other electrical job, and it is worth understanding even if you never touch it yourself.
A generator connected to your house wiring without proper transfer equipment can push power back out onto the utility lines. That endangers the crews working to restore your service, and when the utility comes back on it can destroy your generator and worse. This is why transfer equipment exists and why the connection has to physically prevent your house from being fed by the generator and the utility at the same time.
This is the entire reason to have a generator connection done by a licensed electrician and permitted. Everything else about the job is ordinary work. This part is not negotiable.
Never back feed through a dryer outlet. You will find people online describing how to power a house by plugging a generator into an outlet with a cord that has male ends on both sides. It is exactly the hazard described above, plus live exposed prongs. If somebody suggested this to you, please call and let us show you the right way instead.
What a hookup involves
- An inlet outside. A weather rated connection point mounted where you will actually place the generator, so you plug in outdoors and nothing runs through a doorway.
- Transfer equipment at the panel. The piece that makes it impossible for utility power and generator power to be connected at the same time.
- Deciding which circuits matter. A portable generator cannot run everything, so the useful conversation is which circuits you want back. Refrigerator, some lighting, outlets for fans and phone charging, the well pump if you have one, and for many people at least some cooling.

Portable or standby
Both are legitimate and they suit different people. A portable generator costs less up front, needs you to be home to roll it out, start it, and keep fuel in it, and typically covers a chosen set of circuits. A standby unit is installed permanently outside, starts on its own when the power drops whether or not you are home, and runs on an existing fuel supply so nobody is handling gas cans in a storm.
The honest question is what happens if the power goes out while you are away, and how long you are willing to be without cooling. For a lot of people up here who travel, that answer points one direction. For others a portable and a good plan is plenty. We will talk through it rather than pushing you toward the bigger sale.
Do this before hurricane season, not during it
Every year the calls come in the same week, when there is a storm in the Gulf and everybody wants a hookup by Friday. Permits take time, equipment gets scarce, and everybody in the trade is booked. If you are thinking about it, the time to handle it is a quiet month when it can be done properly and inspected without anyone rushing.
