The extension cord is the problem
Almost every cart owner starts the same way. The charger came with the cart, there is an outlet somewhere on the garage wall, and an extension cord bridges the gap. It works, right up until it does not.
Here is why that setup is worse than it looks. A cart charger pulls a steady load for hours at a stretch, usually overnight while nobody is awake to notice anything. Household extension cords are not built for that kind of sustained draw, and the connection points warm up. Add a garage that hits well over a hundred degrees on a July afternoon and you have a cord getting hot in a space full of cardboard boxes and paint cans. On top of that, the outlet you plugged into is almost certainly shared with the washer, the freezer, or the garage door opener, so the charger is competing with whatever else is running.
A dedicated outlet where the cart actually parks solves all of it at once. Nothing to trip over, nothing to unplug when you need the outlet for something else, and a circuit doing one job.
What we install
The right answer depends on your charger and where the cart lives, so we look at both before quoting anything.
In the main garage
A dedicated receptacle positioned where you park, mounted at a height that keeps the cord off the floor. We route the circuit cleanly rather than stapling cable across the wall, and it goes back to its own breaker in the panel so nothing else shares it.
In a detached cart garage
Plenty of Villages homes have a separate cart garage, and that is usually where people want to charge. Running power to a detached structure is a different job than an outlet ten feet from the panel, since it brings its own requirements for how the circuit is run and terminated at the second building. It is routine work, but it should be quoted and permitted as what it actually is.
Outdoor and carport locations
If the cart parks under a carport or on an uncovered pad, the receptacle and cover have to be rated for that exposure, and the circuit needs the appropriate protection for a wet location. This is where we most often find work done by somebody unlicensed, using an indoor-rated device with a flimsy cover.
Bring your charger into the conversation. Lithium and lead-acid chargers do not draw the same way, and different cart brands ship with different equipment. Tell us what you have when you call and we will size the circuit to your actual charger rather than guessing.
While we are in the garage
Most cart owners have us handle a couple of other things during the same visit, since the trip charge is already covered and the panel is already open. Common combinations are an EV charger circuit if there is a car to charge too, extra receptacles for a workbench or freezer, better garage lighting, and whole-home surge protection, which matters more than people expect for anything with a charging board in it.
Why a dedicated circuit is worth doing right
- It runs for hours unattended. Overnight charging is exactly when you want the connection to be solid and the circuit to be sized for the job.
- Your garage gets brutally hot. Heat is hard on connections, and a marginal one gets worse every summer.
- Nothing else competes for it. No tripping when the freezer compressor kicks on at the same time.
- It is permanent. Positioned where you park, with no cord to coil up, trip over, or forget.
- It transfers with the house. A properly installed cart outlet is a selling point up here, not an inspection item.
