What a GFCI actually does
A regular breaker protects your house wiring from overload. A GFCI protects you. It is a completely different job.
The device constantly compares the current going out with the current coming back. Those should match. When they do not, it means some of that current found another path, and the path it is worried about is a person. The moment it senses that imbalance, it shuts off, fast enough to matter. That is why they are where they are: kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoors, near the pool. Anywhere water and electricity can meet, which in Florida is most of the house.
These are the outlets with the test and reset buttons on the face. They are also frequently the reason an outlet somewhere else in your house has quietly stopped working.
One tripped device can kill several outlets
This is the part that confuses people, and it is worth understanding because it will save you a service call one day.
A single GFCI device can protect other ordinary outlets downstream of it on the same circuit. Those downstream outlets have no buttons and look completely normal. When the GFCI trips, every one of them goes dead too, and there is no indication at the dead outlet telling you why.
So the bathroom outlet stops working, and the actual tripped device is out in the garage behind a shelf. Or the lanai outlet quits and the culprit is in a bathroom nobody uses. When a GFCI keeps tripping
A device that trips once in a while, especially after a storm or with something plugged in outside, is usually doing exactly what it should. One that trips constantly is telling you something, and the useful question is what changed.
- Moisture in an outdoor box or fixture. Far and away the most common cause here, and it often shows up after heavy rain or during the humid months.
- A failing appliance. Some equipment develops small leakage as it ages. Unplug everything on the circuit, reset, then add things back one at a time.
- A wiring fault. Damaged insulation or a bad connection somewhere on the circuit.
- The device itself. GFCIs do wear out, and in Florida humidity they do not last forever. Sometimes the fix genuinely is a new device.
Never replace a tripping GFCI with a regular outlet to make the problem go away. We do find this, usually done by a previous owner or a handyman. It does not fix anything. It removes the protection that was telling you something is wrong, and leaves the fault in place.
Test them, and here is how
These are mechanical devices and they can fail without any outward sign. A GFCI that looks fine may not actually be protecting anything. Testing takes ten seconds: press the test button, and the reset button should pop out and the outlet should go dead. Press reset and it should come back. If pressing test does nothing, or reset will not hold, the device needs replacing.
Worth doing a couple of times a year. Pick something you already remember, like when the clocks change.
GFCI, AFCI, and the ones that do both
You may run into a device labeled AFCI, or a breaker doing that job at the panel. It is protecting against something different: arcing, the kind of small persistent sparking that a damaged wire or a loose connection can produce, which is a fire concern rather than a shock concern. Some devices handle both. If you are not sure what is protecting what in your house, that is a reasonable thing to ask about when we are out.
