Your lanai is a room. Most of them are not wired like one
People move to Central Florida and end up spending half their waking hours on the lanai. It is where the coffee happens in the morning and where company ends up at night. Then the sun goes down and there is one fixture by the door doing all the work, with a fan that came with the house and an outlet nobody can reach.
Lighting a lanai properly is not about adding brightness. It is about putting light in the places that make the space usable after dark: over where people actually sit, on the steps, along the screen line so the enclosure does not turn into a black wall the moment the sun sets.
What belongs on a Florida porch
- Outdoor rated ceiling fans. The single biggest comfort upgrade out there. Moving air is what makes a Florida evening tolerable, and it keeps bugs from settling. See our ceiling fan page for how the mounting works.
- Recessed cans in the lanai ceiling. Clean, out of the way, and they light the whole space evenly instead of throwing one hot spot by the door.
- Fixtures over the seating and dining area. Light where people are, not where the builder put a box.
- Step and perimeter lighting. The single most useful safety item out there, and the one people ask for after somebody misses a step.
- Weather rated receptacles. For a radio, a fan, string lights, or a phone charger, with covers that actually stay closed in weather.
- Dimmers and separate switching. Bright when you are cleaning up, low when you are sitting out there. One switch for everything is the most common complaint we hear.
Damp rated and wet rated are not the same thing. A covered lanai ceiling and a fixture that catches blowing rain are two different exposures, and they take two different fixtures. Using the wrong one is the most common shortcut we find on outdoor work, and Florida weather finds it within a season or two.
What Florida does to outdoor electrical
This climate is harder on exterior work than almost anywhere. Humidity sits in everything. Afternoon storms drive rain sideways under a roof that looked plenty deep. Salt is in the air even this far inland. Screen enclosures keep the bugs out but do nothing about moisture.
Which is why exterior fixtures and devices have ratings, and why those ratings matter more here than they would in a dry climate. Indoor equipment mounted outside does not fail the day it goes in. It fails a year and a half later, usually right after the warranty conversation would have been easy.
Beyond the lanai
Most people who call about the porch end up wanting a couple of other things while we are there. Common ones are exterior lighting on the garage side of the house, soffit lighting, fixtures at the front entry, and receptacles on the exterior walls for seasonal use. If you want lighting out in the yard and beds rather than on the structure, that is landscape lighting and it works differently.
